This decrease in life expectancy follows a long-term trend of increasing expected lifespan among Americans.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributes the decline in life expectancy to two factors: substance abuse and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic, with its widespread lockdowns, exacerbated the ongoing drug addiction crisis by isolating many vulnerable individuals and separating them from support networks that could assist them in avoiding substance abuse.
Cancer and heart disease continue to be the leading causes of death in the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has cautioned Americans that multiple respiratory illnesses may continue to be prevalent for an extended period.
During a telebriefing at the beginning of the month, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky stated that levels of flu-like illness were higher than usual for this time of year, but also noted that there were signs that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) had reached its peak in some regions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), RSV typically causes mild symptoms similar to a cold, and older adults, infants, and young children are at a higher risk of infection. A fever is also a symptom of RSV.

That being said, who knows what the Democrats are going to do in 2024. California Governor Gavin Newsom has repeatedly denied he will run for president. Kamala Harris has botched her VP position so badly she's not even under consideration. Who the heck knows?
