Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot suggested in a public statement that one strategy for reducing crime in the city is for residents to refrain from carrying cash, as reported by News Channel 20.
Mayor Lightfoot, a candidate in the upcoming re-election campaign, addressed safety issues during a debate among candidates. Safety is a major concern among Chicago residents.
Lightfoot mentioned that although there has been considerable talk about the security of street vendors, relatively few concrete proposals have been put forward for ensuring the safety of both citizens and vendors.
The moderator interrupted with a query, "What is your proposed solution to the issue?"
"I just explained it," Lightfoot replied.
"We have been in Little Village working with street vendors, understanding what the nature of the crime is, making sure we're doing things in concert with them to help them make sure that their money is secure, not use money if at all possible, using other forms of transactions to take care of themselves,” the mayor fired back.

Other candidates in the debate also offered their own solutions to the safety concerns raised. Some of the candidates held Mayor Lightfoot responsible for the safety issues in the city.
"You have to stop playing politics so much. This particular administration, now, she feels safe and the mayor's office feels safe, but the people are afraid," candidate Willie Wilson remarked. He criticized the current administration for not prioritizing the safety of the citizens.
"You have a transportation system where the workers don't feel safe, the riders don't feel safe, it means we have to make sure we're providing critical investments," said Brandon Johnson, currently the commissioner for Cook County. He emphasized the need for increased investment in transportation infrastructure to improve safety for both workers and riders.
Lightfoot accused the other candidates of using "sound bites that have no basis in fact." She defended her administration's record on safety and stated that the other candidates were not offering realistic solutions to the issue.
