Costco has confirmed a rumor that has been buzzing for weeks: its food courts are swapping Pepsi for Coca-Cola products. Customers are already buzzing with excitement.
"This summer, we will be converting our food court fountain business back over to Coca-Cola," said Costco CEO Ron Vachris at the annual shareholders meeting.
The rumor first surfaced last month on Costco Insider. The publication announced, "After over a decade, Costco is switching back from Pepsi to Coke products in their stores."
The change means Coke, Coke Zero, Diet Coke, and Sprite will replace Pepsi’s lineup, including Starry. This decision reverses a 2013 switch that brought Pepsi to the food courts.
Costco Insider explained the 2013 swap as a "cost-saving measure to keep their famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo." That combo price hasn’t budged since the 1980s.
Last year, CFO Gary Millerchip reassured fans, "The $1.50 hot dog price is safe." He made this promise during a quarterly earnings call in May.
While Pepsi fans voiced their disappointment, Coke lovers couldn’t hide their excitement. Many are thrilled to see Coca-Cola making a comeback.
Matt West, editor of Costco Insider, shared that a poll among followers showed "87% preferred Coke over Pepsi." Customers’ opinions seem to align with the new direction.
Reddit users joined the conversation, too. "This better not be a December fools prank," one wrote. Another added, "I don’t even take the cup when I get the hot dog! I’ll be super happy if they go to Coca-Cola."
Costco’s decision has stirred strong feelings, but Coke fans are ready to raise their glasses.
