Joe Biden's home state of Delaware elected the first "transgender" state senator in United States history on Tuesday.
Sarah McBride, a biological male who self identifies as a female, beat out Republican candidate Steve Washington and is set to replace state Senator Harris McDowell.
McBride is currently the national press secretary for the LGBT activist group Human Rights Campaign.

Politico reports:
McBride’s win, which was reported by The New York Times, means she will be the highest-ranking openly transgender official in the country. She is part of a surge of transgender candidates running for office this election cycle.
McBride, who made history at the Democratic National Convention in 2016 when she became the first openly transgender person to speak at any major-party convention in the U.S., was expected to win the heavily Democratic 1st state Senate District, which includes parts of Wilmington.
There are currently four openly transgender U.S. state legislators: Virginia state Del. Danica Roem; Colorado state Rep. Brianna Titone; and New Hampshire state Reps. Lisa Bunker and Gerri Cannon.

“Sarah’s overwhelming victory is a powerful testament to the growing influence of transgender leaders in our politics and gives hope to countless trans people looking toward a brighter future,” said Annise Parker, the president and CEO of the LGBTQ Victory Fund.
“Throughout this election cycle, Donald Trump and other cynical politicians attempted to use trans people as a political weapon, believing they could gain popularity by stoking fear and hate. For Sarah to shatter a lavender ceiling in such a polarizing year is a powerful reminder that voters are increasingly rejecting the politics of bigotry in favor of candidates who stand for fairness and equality. Her victory will inspire more trans people to follow in her footsteps and run for public office,” she added.
Biology is not hate. It is truth. The facts do not care about feelings. Electing someone who is having such an identity crisis says a lot about the voters. People with mental issues should not be in positions of authority and leadership.
