Democrat Senator Rips Trump for 'God-Tier' Trolling 'to trigger a meltdown'

U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., called President-elect Trump's decision to choose Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general "God-tier trolling."

Talking to reporters, Fetterman noted that Trump had some solid picks, though he left Gaetz out of that group.

"It's just like a God-tier kind of trolling to provoke a meltdown," he said. "Dems' views on Gaetz aren't the issue. The real story is how my GOP colleagues will justify voting for that j--- off."

Trump has also tapped Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for secretary of state and Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., as U.N. ambassador. Those, Fetterman said, were serious picks.

He pointed out that Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., previously served as Missouri’s attorney general, which he thought made Schmitt a better fit for the role.

"He would have been a solid pick," Fetterman said. "But Gaetz? That's pure trolling. I’m interested to see how the GOP explains this mess."

Gaetz’s confirmation could face tough obstacles in the Senate.

"He will never get confirmed," a Republican senator anonymously told Fox News Digital. Another GOP source added, "Ain't gonna happen."

After Trump announced Gaetz’s nomination, Gaetz resigned from the House on Wednesday.

The House Ethics Committee has been investigating Gaetz over alleged sexual misconduct, drug use, and improper gifts.

Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., who chairs the Ethics Committee, stated, "If Gaetz is no longer in Congress, the ethics investigation would end."

Gaetz was also once under investigation by the DOJ in a probe related to sex trafficking allegations.

Last year, Gaetz's office said the DOJ had closed the case and that he wouldn’t face charges.
