Derek Chauvin Sentenced 22.5 Years for ‘Murder’ of George Floyd

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22-and-a-half years in prison on Friday for the “murder” of George Floyd.

I put murder in quotation marks because although Chauvin was officially convicted of the crime, the evidence proves otherwise. The evidence shows that Floyd died of a drug overdose from the lethal amounts of fentanyl in his system.

However, this is one of the biggest racial cases in recent history, and therefore it was treated with the upmost harshness. I am not saying that Floyd deserved to die....but he was a criminal and should not be glorified. Nor should Chauvin be paying the consequences of a crime he did not commit.

With good behavior, Chauvin, 45, could be paroled after serving two-thirds of his sentence, or about 15 years.

In imposing the punishment, Judge Peter Cahill went beyond the 12 1/2-year sentence prescribed under state guidelines, citing “your abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty” shown to Floyd.

Chauvin was immediately led back to prison. As with the verdicts in April, he showed little emotion when the judge pronounced the sentence. His eyes moved rapidly around the courtroom, his COVID-19 mask obscuring much of his face.

The fired white officer was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for pressing his knee against Floyd’s neck for up to 9 1/2 minutes as the 46-year-old Black man gasped that he couldn’t breathe and went limp on May 25, 2020.

TX Gov. Vetoes Funding After Dem Lawmakers Walkout on Voting Bill

On Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott vetoed funding for members of state legislature after state Democrats blocked a Republican-supported bill on election procedures.

“Texans don’t run from a legislative fight, and they don’t walk away from unfinished business,” Abbott said after the veto. “Funding should not be provided for those who quit their job early, leaving their state with unfinished business and exposing taxpayers to higher costs for an additional legislative session.”
