During a Sesame Street episode kids will be introduced to the term addiction by a character who was brought on in May who lives in Foster Care. The reason is because May's mother is going through a "tough time."
In a YouTube video the muppet named Karli speaks to a 10-year-old girl named Salisa Woodbury about their experiences that have came through their parents being addicted to opioids.
“Both our parents have had the same problem, addiction,” Karli says while looking at the camera.
“My mom and dad told me that addiction is a sickness,” Salia replied.
“Oh, yeah, yeah,” Karli responded. “A sickness that makes a person feel like they have to take drugs or drink alcohol to feel okay.”
Karli explained her part to "Today."
“My mom’s been going through a tough time. She has what’s called a grown-up problem. And grown-up problems need grown-ups to help fix the problem, so my mom had to go away for a little while.”
At this point Karli has not been added to the actual show and is only going to be a part of their online initiative called "Sesame Street in the Communities."
This is a tough situation. Hopefully this serves as a learning experience for children and doesn't have a negative impact.
