Former CNN Host Challenges Dems on Tariffs: 'Really Bothers Me'

Chris Cuomo ripped into Democrats on Monday. He called out their fake outrage over Trump’s tariffs. The tariffs targeted Canada, Mexico, and China to push action on opioids and illegal migration.

Chuck Schumer and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sounded the alarm. They warned prices would skyrocket if the tariffs took effect. But on CUOMO, Chris Cuomo dismissed their concerns. He said they ignored inflation for years under the last administration.

“What really bothers me about all of it is, with these tariffs, everybody knew they weren’t going to be operative in all likelihood,” Cuomo said. “Certainly, Democrats like Schumer knew it was a ploy, and yet he had to have his own ruse.”

Cuomo played a clip of Schumer holding a Corona beer and an avocado. Schumer warned Trump’s tariffs would make them more expensive.

“You know, it’s always good when you have props,” Cuomo said after the clip. “Look, same mistake AOC made when she warned that Trump’s threat of tariffs against Colombia would make your coffee more expensive.” He didn’t hold back. “If they want to give a damn about inflation, they should have done something over the last few years, okay? And they didn’t. They just denied it.”

Then he called out both parties. “That should be a message for the left and the right. Fix. Show you have better ideas to fix,” he said. “Trump rubs plenty of people the wrong way, and he often says things poorly and in ways that abuse norms. But you know what? We had an election about that. And he won.”

He wasn’t done. “So just judge what he does and save the style points for the rabble on social media,” Cuomo continued. “Make it the noise. You want to be part of it? Be part of it. But it’s not what matters. How you feel about how he is is meaningless to me and my family.”

Cuomo admitted Trump’s tariffs had an impact. Canada and Mexico both made moves to tighten border security. In return, Trump paused the 25% tariffs for 30 days.

“You know what Schumer should be saying right now? ‘It worked,’” Cuomo said. “And I have some ideas for what else needs to change with Canada and Mexico while you got ’em at the table for this 30-day window.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged $1.3 billion to secure Canada’s border. He also appointed a “Fentanyl Czar” to oversee a $200 million anti-trafficking effort. In response, he delayed Canada’s own 25% retaliatory tariff.

Mexico followed suit. President Claudia Sheinbaum deployed 10,000 National Guard soldiers to America’s southern border. The goal? To slow the flow of drugs and illegal immigration.
