Former ESPN Football Analyst Sounds the Alarm on Travis Kelce's Dismal Start to the Season

Travis Kelce’s slow start to the 2024 season remains a hot topic in sports media. In Sunday night’s 22-17 win over the Falcons, Kelce managed only 30 yards with four receptions.

NBC’s Cris Collinsworth pointed out a lack of “magic” between Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. Meanwhile, Todd McShay focused on other aspects of the All-Pro’s life off the field.

“Every show, every broadcast lately, no one’s saying he’s out of shape,” McShay said on “The Ryen Russillo Podcast.” He continued, “He’s been partying, jet-setting with the most famous person in the world, going to events like the U.S. Open with Taylor Swift.”

McShay added, “Compare him from preseason 2022 to now. He’s not the same athlete, but everyone’s asking why he’s not part of the offense. It’s not just double coverage. He’s simply not the same right now.”

Kelce, now in his 12th NFL season, has just eight catches for 69 yards and no touchdowns this year. Last season, he didn’t reach 1,000 yards for the first time since 2015, though he says he no longer cares about stats.

“I don’t see the same explosiveness,” McShay remarked. “He’ll work himself into shape, but it’s okay to admit he’s not at his peak right now. He’ll get there, but why can’t we say that?”

McShay didn’t shy away from Kelce’s off-field activities, adding, “You can’t do all that and still be the same athlete you were in 2022. It’s impossible to keep up that schedule and stay in top football shape.”

He was clear, though, “I’m not blaming Taylor Swift. But after two Super Bowls, with all the commercials, events, and social appearances, it’s tough to maintain focus on football.”

Despite the critiques, Mahomes remains supportive of Kelce. “Teams respect Travis so much,” Mahomes said. “We’re calling plays for him, but he’s drawing two or three defenders every time. He understands it, but he’s all about winning.”
