The Girl Scouts of the USA is awarding children with a rainbow-hued badge for their involvement in LGBT-focused activities and initiatives, which include participating in Pride parades and reading books penned by LGBT authors.
All members of the Girl Scouts are being motivated to engage in Pride Month activities, with the organization offering a unique badge as recognition for their participation.
The Pride badge is incorporated into the scout's diverse community celebration component, sitting alongside other commemorations such as Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Asian-American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
“Celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month by having fun learning about all the communities it represents while earning a new patch!” the Girl Scouts’ website states.
“The Girl Scout LGBTQ+ Pride Month Celebration Fun Patch is designed for Girl Scouts of all levels and their leaders to honor LGBTQ+ history, to celebrate the diverse cultures and identities of LGBTQ+ people, and to acknowledge the many contributions of the LGBTQ+ community has made and continues to make across our nation. Girls and leaders have plenty of activities to choose from to earn this fun patch, and we encourage girls of all identities to participate,” it adds.
A PDF document available on the scout's website enumerates 20 activities that girls can engage in to secure the unique badge. Depending on their scouting level, members need to partake in either three or six activities to be awarded the badge.
Options for activities include creating a rainbow flag, reading books penned by LGBT writers, attending a Pride event, watching documentaries centered around LGBT history, or making art “that celebrates how families come in all shapes, sizes, and kinds.”
The “Fun Patch Activities” packet also provides children with “LGBTQ+ vocabulary” information, which defines “lesbian,” “gay,” “bisexual,” “transgender or trans,” and “queer.”
The Girl Scouts also market an LGBT-themed tank top adorned with a rainbow motif that advocates "all places should be safe spaces."
A post from the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts on Facebook depicted members taking part in a Pride parade.
“We center diversity, belonging, and inclusion by welcoming everyone who identifies as a girl, transgender boys, non-binary youth members, and adults of all genders. This month and every month, we are proud to stand in support of our LGBTQIA+ Girl Scouts and community members who continue to face hate, discrimination, and violence for living as they are. We see you, we hear you, and we love you,” the post stated.
