HomePolitical NewsGov. Newsom Signs Bill to Allow Gun Crime Victims to Sue Gun Makers Keely Compson July 12, 2022 On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation, which was sponsored by Assembly member Phil Ting, to allow residents who are victims of gun crime to sue gun makers. According to the new law, gun makers “could face lawsuits if their products are ‘abnormally dangerous,’ are sold in a way that lets them be illegally converted, or end up in the hands of people who are prohibited from owning firearms.” Newsom tweeted, claiming that gun makers have “[shielded] themselves from any liability,” and then explained that the bill he was signing would eliminate that immunity in California. I highly doubt his little show of power will hold up in any court of law.
