LGBTQ Activists Defend Despicable Chant Targeting Children

lgbtq

In a recent report, advocates from the LGBTQ community came forward in support of drag queen marchers who were heard chanting, "We're coming for your children" — a phrase they insist has been used historically.

On Tuesday, NBC News featured a story suggesting the LGBTQ activists' perspective that the said chant, recorded at the New York City drag queen parade in June, was "taken out of context."

Brian Griffin, the founding organizer of the New York City drag queen parade, said in his conversation with NBC News, "It’s all just words. It’s all presented to fulfill their worst stereotypes of us."

In the article, NBC News highlighted LGBTQ activists' assertion that the chant "we're coming for your children" has been "used for years." Contrary to this, a community note was added by Twitter to NBC News' tweet of the story, indicating there's no evidence backing these claims.

"The news articles provides no evidence of the ‘we’re coming for your children’ chant being done for years at pride nor does it quote specific individuals that make this claim," the note reads. "This is very irresponsible reporting."

Karla Jay, who was the inaugural female leader of New York's Gay Liberation Front, conveyed to NBC News that the chant "We're coming for your children" was intended to satirize criticisms towards the LGBTQ community.

"The person who said this in a march isn’t the person who came up with this idea — the person in the march is saying, ‘Go ahead, call me this; why do I care?’" Jay said. "The person is trying to destigmatize this and claim their own power. You can’t blame the victims here, and that’s what the right wing is doing."

NBC News quoted two drag queens expressing their view that the chant "we're coming for your children" was in poor taste and reflected only a subset of the LGBTQ community. The coordinator for the current year's New York City drag queen parade, Hucklefaery Ken, described the chant as a "bad joke that is being used to serve the interests of parasitic, predatory political propaganda and policy."
