McDonald’s is phasing out one of its iconic utensils to promote sustainability - the unique square-shaped McFlurry spoon.
The fast-food giant mentioned, "True McFlurry fans know the spoon doubles as a spindle, which restaurant crews use to mix the perfect amount of sweet toppings into our creamy soft serve."
Yet, from this month onward, McDonald’s has announced that its outlets will adopt a "reusable spindle that’s swapped out and cleaned after each McFlurry is made" and will be serving the desserts with a "smaller black spoon that uses less plastic (the same one that comes with our Sundaes)."
"This small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste in restaurants – while giving customers the same delicious McFlurry they know and love. That’s a win-win in our book," McDoanld's added.
McDonald's will start serving up McFlurrys with the same type of spoon the chain serves with its sundaes, which are smaller and use less plastic than the McFlurry spoons.

The company mentioned that this alteration aligns with its efforts to reconfigure some of its most "iconic products" to reduce superfluous waste and shift towards greener materials.
"So while you may not see our famous spindle-spoon in your McFlurry anymore, know that it's still working hard for you (and the planet!) behind the counter," added McDonald’s.
This modification follows McDonald’s move the previous month to phase out self-serve drink stations, which had been an integral part of its dining spaces since 2004. Customers will now have to head back to the counter for a refill.
