NBC Removes Longtime Host From Show Due to Failing Ratings

nbc host chuck todd

Chuck Todd, host of NBC's "Meet the Press," made an announcement on Sunday revealing his decision to step away from the show. The reason behind this move is the program's struggle to attract as many viewers as its competitors on ABC and CBS.

In expressing his departure, Todd emphasized his preference to leave a little earlier rather than overstay his welcome. He mentioned that he will be leaving the program later this year. Throughout 2023, "Meet the Press" has maintained an average viewership of 2.5 million, falling behind ABC's "This Week" with 2.6 million viewers and CBS' "Face the Nation" with 2.9 million viewers.

Furthermore, Todd finds himself in third place among the coveted key demographic of adults aged 25-54, which holds significance for advertisers. "Meet the Press" has secured an average of 468,000 viewers in this demographic, while "This Week" attracted 489,000 and "Face the Nation" achieved 517,000 viewers.

Even in the most recent episodes, Todd's "Meet the Press" remains positioned below "This Week" and "Face the Nation" in terms of viewership.

In the month of May, "Face the Nation" on CBS garnered an average viewership of 2.6 million, surpassing "This Week" which managed to attract 2.5 million viewers. Meanwhile, "Meet the Press" settled for an average audience of 2.2 million viewers during the same period.

When considering the demographic perspective, "Face the Nation" secured an average of 482,000 viewers in May, compared to 451,000 viewers for "This Week" and 406,000 viewers for "Meet the Press."

Chuck Todd, who assumed the role of "Meet the Press" moderator in 2014, had held the top position among the coveted demographic favored by advertisers for many years. However, he experienced a decline in recent seasons. Despite stepping away from "Meet the Press," Todd plans to continue his association with NBC.

"While today is not my final show, this is going to be my final summer here at ‘Meet the Press.' It’s been an amazing nearly decade-long run. I’m really proud of what this team and I have built over the last decade and frankly the last 15-plus years that I’ve been here at NBC, which also includes my time as political director. I’ve loved so much of this job, helping to explain America to Washington and explain Washington to America," Todd said at the conclusion of Sunday's show.
