President Trump Caves: Shutdown Ends With No Border Wall, Pelosi Wins for Second Time This Week

For the second time in a week, President Trump caves as the government shutdown ends with no border wall. First it was the State of the Union, now the wall.

The government has reopened and there is no promise to build the wall. Open borders continue on the southern border of the United States.

President Trump is being attacked on Twitter for his defeat to Pelosi.

CNN is celebrating their victory.

After 35 days, Trump and congressional Democrats reached the agreement on Friday. A short-term spending bill allows the government to re-open temporarily. This separates the issue of border security from funding of the government. This will keep the government open until February 15.

President Trump said if there was no deal in place for the border wall by February 15, he would use his presidential powers to declare an emergency.

“Walls should not be controversial,” President Trump said. “As commander-in-chief, my highest priority is the defense of our great country.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that while he supports President Trump's decision to re-open the government, he asked the Democrats to step up and negotiate a deal for border security by February 15.

“Going forward, I hope Democrats will stay true to the commitment they have stated constantly over the past weeks – that once government was re-opened, they would be perfectly willing to negotiate in good faith on full-year government funding that would include a significant investment in urgently needed border security measures, including physical barriers," McConnell said.

President Trump said that he plans to work with the Democrats, but if things don't work out, declaring emergency is not out of the question.

"If we can't do that, then, obviously, we'll do the emergency, because that's what this is-- a national emergency," Trump said at the White House to reporters Friday afternoon to reporters.
