Republican Governor Under Fire After Taking Shot at DeSantis

While issuing a statement on an unrelated issue, the chief spokesman for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, a Republican, attacked Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' stance on abortion, causing a stir on social media.

On Thursday, National Review staff writer Nate Hochman published an article in which he revealed an exchange with South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem's team. Hochman had contacted Noem's team for a comment on alleged connections between South Dakota Republican lawmakers and transgender activist and medical groups. In response, Ian Fury, Chief of Communications for Noem, denied "any implication that Governor Noem is overly cozy with" the lobbying groups and sent a follow-up email comparing Noem's record on abortion with that of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

"Governor Noem was the only Governor in America on national television defending the Dobbs decision," Fury wrote. "Where was Governor DeSantis? Hiding behind a 15-week ban. Does he believe that 14-week-old babies don’t have a right to live?"

Hochman wrote that Fury, in an "unprompted diatribe," also accused National Review of being "no longer pro-life" because it was "carrying water for Gov. DeSantis."

Hochman shared the story on his Twitter account.

"Kristi Noem's chief of communications unloaded on Ron DeSantis yesterday, accusing DeSantis of ‘hiding behind’ the 15-week abortion ban he signed in April — and questioning if DeSantis believed ‘that 14-week-old babies don’t have a right to live,’ Hocman wrote.

Twitter users reacted to Hochman's account of Fury's comments, criticizing Fury's attacks and speculating on Noem's 2024 presidential aspirations.
