Sam's Club Phasing Out Checkouts: Here's How You'll Pay

Sam’s Club is shaking things up. The Walmart-owned retailer is ditching traditional checkouts in all 600 stores. AI is stepping in to streamline the shopping experience.

Customers will now scan items using the Sam’s Club app as they shop. At the exit, AI will verify purchases—no more receipt checks at the door. It’s all part of the “Scan & Go” system, introduced in April 2024.

Now, the process is getting an upgrade. The new “Just Walk” or “Just Go” exit tech eliminates the need for any old-school checkout. Traditional lanes are being phased out for good.

"This is one of the fastest, most scalable transformations happening in retail today," said CEO Chris Nicholas. "We’re investing with intention — in our fleet, our associates and the member experience."

The newly opened store in Grapevine, Texas, already runs the system. Sam’s Club says this store “sets the standard” for what’s next. It’s all about speed, ease, and tech-forward design.

Inside, it’s more than just scanning. There’s a vertical tire carousel, automated forklifts, and even a pizza robot. “It’s a place where human-centered design and technology meet convenience and discovery,” the company said back in December.

While Sam’s Club surges ahead with AI, Costco isn’t budging. The rival is sticking to its traditional checkout lanes. Walmart, on the other hand, is still testing AI’s limits.

Sam’s Club says its 100,000 associates are still the heart of the company. AI is helping cut out repetitive work, making jobs smoother and more engaging.

"When a member has a meaningful, positive interaction with an associate, they’re more likely to renew — and stay loyal," Nicholas said. “We’re building a culture that supports our associates as much as our members, because that’s how we win.”
