Republican Senator Susan Collins told CBS News that she is “very likely” to vote for witnesses at the Senate impeachment trial.
The CBS reporter asked, “On impeachment, are there four — right now, are there four Republicans who will be voting to have witnesses at the trial?”
“I don’t know the answer to that question yet.” Collins replied, “We will hear the President’s attorneys complete their presentation today, then tomorrow on Thursday will be an opportunity for those of us who have been listening to the case to submit questions to both sides through the Chief Justice, there will also be written questions.”
She continued, “I’ve already compiled a great number of them, I’ve got to winnow down my list. And then on Friday we’re likely to have the vote on witnesses. I do know that, but for the efforts that four of us made to ensure that that vote would occur that it’s unlikely that we would have had that opportunity.”
”So I’m pleased that every senator will have the opportunity to vote on whether or not it additional witnesses and documents are necessary. It is very likely that I’m going to conclude that yes, we do need to hear from witnesses,” the senator added.
The reporter inquired, “So are you sensing a bit of a shift in the last 24 hours among your party?”
“There have been a lot more conversations in the last 24 hours among members of the caucus, in part due to the disclosures that are in John Bolton’s book, and also reaction to the testimony that we’ve heard on both sides.” Collins concluded, “I for one believe that there’s some gaps, some ambiguities that need to be cleared up and more information tends to be helpful when you’re making such a weighty decision.”
