Stephen A. Smith is known for his self-assurance and boldness. ESPN even ran a commercial for "First Take" that portrayed him as "never afraid".
However, it appears that Smith, like all of us, can also experience nervousness at times. Though it is rare, he admits. He felt extremely nervous when he had to stand-in for Jimmy Kimmel on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last year.
On Tuesday, Stephen A. Smith was a guest on the "Adam Carolla Show", during which Carolla inquired if Smith had ever attempted stand-up comedy.
Smith, in his typical confident manner, stated that his manager frequently urges him to try stand-up comedy as he believes Smith is "funnier than he thinks". However, Smith is not inclined to do stand-up comedy, although he admires the art form. He then recounted the experience of guest hosting "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last August, as the closest he has ever come to performing stand-up comedy.
Stephen A. Smith was extremely nervous when he hosted "Jimmy Kimmel Live"
“My dumb ass didn’t realize that, ‘wait a minute,’ there’s about a 15, 18-minute monologue that I gotta do,” Smith said. “And I gotta be funny.”
Smith explained, “I’m telling you right now. I’ve been in TV for over 20 years. I have never been scared in my entire life. This scared, rather, in my life.”
He then went on to explain that his nervousness manifests itself in a peculiar manner throughout his body.
“People get nervous, they’re sweating. People get nervous and they gotta get a drink or whatever. Me? I have to go to the toilet. And sometimes it’s just once. This show, in the last hour, I went to the toilet five times.”
Ever heard of TMI, Stephen A?
Obviously not as he kept going.
“I was so scared that I was going to shit in myself when I went out on stage. I was that petrified."
As told to @adamcarolla on the @AdamCarollaShow, @stephenasmith says he was so nervous to host @JimmyKimmelLive last year that he thought was going to "shit himself." pic.twitter.com/aQ7JmG7kbf

Despite his nervousness, last week Stephen A. Smith mentioned his desire to take over for Jimmy Kimmel one day.
For most people, hosting a late-night talk show on national television is not a concern. But, if you ever feel nervous giving a Best Man speech, consider the experience of Stephen A. Smith.
