Theory Suggests Bill Gates is Purposely Causing an Egg Shortage

It is not true that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is deliberately causing an egg shortage to deceive people into purchasing counterfeit eggs.

This is one of the various online conspiracy theories regarding the steep increase in egg prices and the sudden decrease in production.

Last month, a website reported that "Bill Gates invested in artificial eggs a decade prior to the egg shortage." The article sarcastically suggests that Gates had planned ahead by waiting 10 years to make a profit from the egg shortage, implying that he is clever.

According to Politifact, Gates has invested in several alternative food companies such as Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods over the past 10 years. Additionally, as of 2020, he owns almost 250,000 acres of farmland across more than a dozen states, making him the largest private farmland owner in the United States.

“There is no evidence these investments are linked to a nationwide shortage in chicken and egg products,” Politifact wrote.

It is important to note that Politifact has a left-leaning bias, as indicated by All Sides, a platform that evaluates the biases of media outlets. It is also worth remembering that Politifact had previously rated former President Barack Obama's statement "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it" as "True" in 2009.

Forbes reported that in 2013, Politifact acknowledged that Obama's statement was the "Lie of the Year," which was a widely accepted fact at that time.

This was due to a tweet she posted regarding Valerie Jarrett, a highly influential advisor to former President Obama, which read, "Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj." After the incident, Barr issued an apology, stating, "I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I acknowledge that my joke about her politics and appearance was in poor taste and regret it deeply. I understand that it was wrong and I should have known better. I humbly ask for forgiveness." Despite her apology, ABC decided to terminate her from the show.
