Toyota CEO: 'Silent Majority' of Automakers Remain Skeptical About Electronic Vehicles

toyota ceo electric vehicles

This week, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda stated that he is hesitant to shift entirely to the production of electric vehicles and that the majority of those in the automotive industry share this view.

During a visit to Thailand Toyoda made the following comments while speaking to reporters.

“People involved in the auto industry are largely a silent majority,” Toyoda said. “That silent majority is wondering whether EVs are really OK to have as a single option. But they think it’s the trend so they can’t speak out loudly.”

“Because the right answer is still unclear, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just one option,” he continued.

Supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have made it challenging for car manufacturers, particularly those producing electric vehicles, to obtain the necessary raw materials. It is in this context that the aforementioned comments were made.

According to The Wall Street Journal, while some of Toyota's competitors have committed to transitioning solely to electric vehicles and set timelines for doing so, Toyota has taken a different approach by diversifying its future product offerings to include traditional gasoline-powered cars, hybrids, and hydrogen-powered vehicles in addition to electric vehicles.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has cautioned that the shift away from fossil fuels is not as straightforward as some may believe, and that society would be significantly impacted if it attempted to stop using oil and gas overnight.
