A West Virginia woman has had a miraculous recovery and was able to wake up from a coma and identified her attacker as her brother.
49-year-old Wanda Palmer had been in a coma for over two years. In June 2020 she was found sitting upright on her couch unresponsive and covered in blood. Authorities initially believed she was dead when they first arrived on the scene.

"I wouldn't have wagered a nickel for her life that morning, she was in that bad of a shape,” Sheriff Ross Mellinger recalled. “Quite honestly, she was unconscious, circling the drain medically. Massive, massive amounts of head trauma, consistent with some sort of machete or hatchet-type injury.”
The weapon used by her brother was never located.
Though authorities had different opinions on who the attacker was they were never able to make an arrest.
“We had a little bit of an idea what happened, but the problem was, with the nuts and bolts of the case, we had nothing to go on,” Mellinger continued. "There was no eyewitnesses, nobody lived in the home, no surveillance footage, no cell phone records."
That is until Palmer woke up from her coma and identified the tacker. Despite having some brain damage she was still able to communicate.
After her injuries, Palmer can primarily communicate by shaking her head yes or no. Even though she is facing these limitations she was still able to identify her attacker.
The Jackson County WV Sheriff's Department made a Facebook post to announce the arrest:
"ARRESTED....After 2 years of being hospitalized and in a coma resulting from being attacked, hacked, and left for dead, Wanda Palmer is now awake to see her assailant in custody - her brother, Daniel Palmer. Daniel Palmer is charged with Attempted Murder and Malicious Wounding following the June 2020 incident near Cottageville. Continued prayers for the victim please."
