What Happens to Senator Rubio's Seat if He Accepts Position in Trump Administration

President-elect Trump is expected to nominate GOP Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state, according to Fox News Digital.

This would put the spotlight on Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis would need to appoint a replacement for Rubio in the Senate.

Rubio was re-elected in 2022 for a six-year term. That means DeSantis' pick will serve until a special election in 2026 to determine who will finish out Rubio’s term.

The person DeSantis appoints will be eligible to run in that special election. If they win, they’ll serve until 2028 when another election will be held.

DeSantis has the authority to appoint anyone he wants to fill the seat. That includes himself or his wife, Casey.

Many potential replacements have already been discussed, but things could change if Trump has a change of heart.
