Department of Transportation Launches New Service to Help With Flight Delays and Cancellations

In response to the number of flight delays and cancellations, the Department of Transportation has launched a new online dashboard that will provide more information to travelers. The service is launched just ahead of the Labor Day travel-heavy weekend.

According to the AP, travelers "will be able to check the dashboard and see what kinds of guarantees, refunds or compensation the major domestic airlines offer in case of flight delays or cancellations. It’s designed to allow travelers to shop around and favor those airlines that offer the best compensation."

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has been pressuring the airlines to improve their service and give better solutions for travelers who are facing cancellations and delays.

"Passengers deserve transparency and clarity on what to expect from an airline when there is a cancellation or disruption," said Buttigieg. "This dashboard collects that information in one place so travelers can easily understand their rights, compare airline practices, and make informed decisions. The Department will continue to support passengers and to hold airlines responsible for adhering to their customer obligations."

In a statement from the DOT: "Secretary Buttigieg wrote a letter to airline CEOs informing them that DOT would publish the dashboard before Labor Day and urged the airlines to improve their customer service plans before the release. As a result, all but one of the ten largest U.S. airlines made significant changes to their plans to improve services provided to passengers when their flights are canceled or delayed because of an airline issue."

Anyone who has traveled recently understands how much the quality of air travel has declined in recent years. Delays and cancellations have become the norm more than the exception.

Two More States Follow California's Ban on Gas Cars

On Thursday California regulators voted to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035. Now two more states are following the policy from California: Washington and Massachusetts.

Rules from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) require 35% of new vehicles to produce zero emissions by 2026 before rising to a 68% benchmark by 2030 and a 100% level by 2035.

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin is the least popular political figure in a poll released by NBC News with only 11% of registered Democrats having positive feelings about him.
