An error occurred during this week's Powerball draw in Iowa when incorrect winning numbers were accidentally published on the Iowa Lottery's website due to a "human reporting error."
The incorrect numbers were posted early Tuesday morning and remained on the website for several hours until officials rectified the mistake.
The Iowa Lottery recently disclosed that due to the publication of incorrect numbers, prizes ranging from $4 to $200 were mistakenly awarded. During the nearly seven-hour period when these numbers were live, individuals who cashed in winning tickets based on the erroneous numbers were allowed to keep their winnings. However, the lottery did not reveal how many tickets were affected by this error.
Realizing the discrepancy, lottery officials acted promptly to address the situation. They suspended the display of Powerball drawing results on lottery terminals. This measure was taken to prevent further confusion and ensure the integrity of the lottery process.
Eventually, the lottery managed to resolve the issue and updated their system with the correct results. By approximately 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the corrected official results were live. Following this update, the lottery resumed the cashing of Powerball tickets, allowing the normal lottery operations to continue.
"We at the Iowa Lottery sincerely apologizes for the interruption," the statement reads.
"The mistake impacted only the Iowa Lottery’s reporting of the official results for Monday’s Powerball drawing. All other lottery tickets could be purchased, checked and cashed as usual at lottery terminals across the state and the results for all other lottery drawings were recorded correctly."
The Powerball jackpot on Monday night was estimated at $355 million. According to lottery records, almost 4,000 Powerball tickets bought in Iowa won various prizes, from $4 to $200, amounting to a total of $24,382 in winnings from the draw. However, it remains unknown how many of these winners were actually those who benefited from the mistakenly published numbers.
The correct winning numbers for Monday night's Powerball draw were 2-21-38-61-66, with Powerball number 12.
