National Department Store Closing 27 Stores in 15 States

Twenty-seven Kohl’s stores are closing this spring.

The closures will happen by April, according to the retailer. These locations were labeled "underperforming."

"While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores," the company said.

The stores shutting down span 15 states. Kohl’s operates over 1,150 stores across the U.S.

"We always take these decisions very seriously," said CEO Tom Kingsbury. "These actions are necessary to support our business and teams long-term."

Affected stores include cities in Alabama, California, and Illinois, among others. The full list covers areas like Napa, Boise, and North Dallas. You can find the full list here.

Kohl’s is offering severance or new job opportunities to affected employees.

Additionally, the San Bernardino fulfillment center in California will close in May 2025.

The company said newer technology and expanded store order fulfillment have made the facility redundant.

In an SEC filing, Kohl’s estimated $60-80 million in pre-tax charges related to these closures. Most of this will hit in late 2024.

Net sales for Kohl’s dropped over 6% in the first three quarters of 2024 compared to 2023. The company reported $61 million in net income for the same period.
