Kirk Cousins showed pure class on Sunday, despite being benched by the Atlanta Falcons in favor of Michael Penix Jr.
On Tuesday, the Falcons announced Penix as their starting quarterback "moving forward." With just two games left, it looks like Penix will close out the regular season as Atlanta's QB1.
Penix made his first career start Sunday against the New York Giants at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Cousins, instead of sulking, was fully supportive of the rookie quarterback.
A viral clip on X captured a heartfelt moment between Cousins and Penix before the game. Cousins led the two in prayer before they exited the tunnel. He followed it with a pep talk and a reassuring pat on the back.
That moment seemed to spark something in Penix, who had a solid debut. He went 18/27 for 202 yards and an interception, leading the Falcons to a 34-7 victory over the Giants.
The interception wasn’t entirely on Penix. Late in the first half, he threw a perfect pass to Kyle Pitts at the Giants’ three-yard line. But Pitts fumbled it into the hands of a defender, turning a likely touchdown into a turnover.
Considering the circumstances, Penix handled the pressure well. His promotion to starter happened suddenly, and he learned the news in the least glamorous way.
Despite the abrupt change, Cousins showed nothing but grace and leadership, setting an example for rookies and veterans alike.
