The animal welfare organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently came under scrutiny by Community Notes, a fact-checking service on a social platform, following a viral post by PETA stating that turkeys would not consume humans during Thanksgiving.
"We’re lucky turkeys would never do this to us—you don’t have to do it to them, either," PETA stated in a caption accompanying a post that garnered over 26.7 million views online, showing a group of turkeys gathered around a table with a human turkey at its center.
"Turkeys are not vegetarians," according to the Community Note. "Turkeys eat mice, lizards, frogs, and just about anything they can fit in their mouth. If turkeys were larger or had the technological means to farm and eat humans, their current diet reveals they likely would."
Political commentators online ridiculed the post made by PETA.
