PolitiFact Dragged for Admitting DeSantis Was Right: 'We Regret to Inform You'

PolitiFact faced criticism for a tweet in which they tried to provide additional information to the accurate statement made by Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican from Florida, that Alvin Bragg, the District Attorney of Manhattan, downgraded the severity of most felonies in his jurisdiction.

On Tuesday, PolitiFact shared a fact-check article published on Saturday, which came under public scrutiny. Although the article confirmed Governor DeSantis' statement that a majority of felonies were reduced to misdemeanors under the jurisdiction of Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan DA, the tweet promoting the article stated that this was a "common" practice, leading to criticism.

"Yes, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has downgraded felonies as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said, but it’s a common practice among peer counties," the account tweeted.

Bryan Griffin, the press secretary of Governor DeSantis, responded to the tweet and criticized PolitiFact for feeling the need to provide additional context to the governor's statement.

"Yes, @GovRonDeSantis was correct. But @PolitiFact feels compelled to note it's simply ‘common practice’ to refuse to hold criminals accountable in NY," Griffin tweeted.

Joe Cunningham poked fun at how PolitiFact begrudgingly admitted that DeSantis was correct.

"’We regret to inform you that Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida is correct,’" Cunningham tweeted.

Jill Terreri Ramos authored the fact-check and concluded that Governor DeSantis' statement was "True," although she did mention that Alvin Bragg's practice of downgrading felonies to misdemeanors was more commonly done in the area.
