Secret Service Responds to Video of Shooter on Roof at Trump Rally

The U.S. Secret Service and FBI responded to a video by James Copenhaver. He was wounded in the July 13 assassination attempt against former President Trump. The video shows a figure moving across the roof of the building gunman Thomas Crooks shot from.

Copenhaver shared the video exclusively with Fox News Digital. It was taken at 6:08 p.m. on July 13, minutes before Crooks fired at least eight gunshots at 6:11. Counter snipers killed him shortly after.

"The Secret Service is committed to understanding what happened to ensure it never happens again," the agency told Fox News. They pledged full cooperation with Congress, the FBI, and other investigations.

The FBI is aware of the video but had no further comment.

Crooks killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a father and volunteer fire chief. He critically wounded 74-year-old James Copenhaver and 57-year-old David Dutch. Trump was hit by a bullet that sliced his ear but was otherwise unharmed, thanks to a last-second turn of his head.

Law enforcement is piecing together a timeline of events from that evening. They aim to understand how and why Crooks carried out the assassination attempt.

Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley's office released texts showing law enforcement was aware of a suspicious person near the rally site. Photos of Crooks were taken around 4:36 p.m., about 90 minutes before the gunfire began.

FBI officials explained that Crooks climbed HVAC equipment and piping to access the roof of the AGR building. He then moved across multiple rooftops before finding his position, giving him a direct line of sight to Trump.

On July 6, Crooks researched how far Lee Harvey Oswald was from President Kennedy when he was assassinated in 1963. On July 7, he visited the rally site and spent about 20 minutes there, according to FBI special agent Kevin Rojek.

On the day of the rally, Crooks parked his vehicle and flew a drone between 3:50 p.m. and 4 p.m. FBI Director Christopher Wray testified that Crooks was at the rally site for about 70 minutes the morning of the attempt.
