The day after unleashing one of the wildest “South Park” episodes in years, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had a two-word response to the fallout: “We’re sorry” — but with a trademark smirk.
Speaking at Comedy Central’s Comic-Con animation panel on July 24, Parker and Stone sat beside “Beavis and Butt-Head” creator Mike Judge and “Digman!” creator Andy Samberg as they addressed the Season 27 premiere, which featured a naked Donald Trump in bed with Satan, jabs at Paramount’s settlement with Trump, and even the shock cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers didn’t hold back, calling “South Park” a “fourth-rate show” and claiming it “hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years.”
Moderator Josh Horowitz joked about having a subpoena ready, to which Parker coolly replied, “It’s fine; we’re ready.” The duo didn’t flinch as they leaned into the controversy.
Parker admitted they were scrambling to finish the episode, changing jokes up to the last minute. “Three days ago I didn’t know if anyone’s going to like this,” he said. As for what’s next, he added, “Right now we don’t know — it’s super stressful.”
The two revealed that their summer promo video was filled with fake scenes. “You seriously think we went and made a bunch of shows ahead of time and banked them?” Parker joked. “My whiteboard’s blank, dude.”
Stone mock-promised, “No politics. We’re not doing any of that (stuff),” drawing laughs from the audience. But no one’s buying it — especially after this week’s premiere.
They admitted their biggest competition isn’t other TV shows — it’s what creators are doing on TikTok and YouTube. “We have a great gig, but I’m jealous,” Stone said. “You see someone do something in their front yard, and it’s really funny.”
