Rumors emerged Thursday that the founder of a major technology company is building a lavish $100 million compound in Hawaii, designed to withstand various apocalyptic scenarios, barring those involving significant sea level rise.
This luxurious estate, situated on Kauai, is to be known as Koolau Ranch. According to reports from Wired, construction is already underway. The property is set to become one of the priciest ever built in recent times. Key features include a 5,000-square-foot underground bunker, rumored to have an escape hatch accessible via a ladder. The compound is also said to house over 30 bedrooms and bathrooms, in addition to multiple guest houses and treehouses, all interconnected by wooden bridges.
Everyone involved in this high-profile construction project is under strict orders to maintain secrecy about their work. Anyone who breaches the security perimeter, be it carpenters, electricians, painters, or security personnel, is subject to a stringent non-disclosure agreement (NDA), as reported by several workers on the project. This agreement is taken seriously, not just a mere formality. There are instances where workers were allegedly removed from the project for sharing details on social media. The construction teams are segregated, working on distinct parts of the site, and are prohibited from discussing their tasks with other teams, as per sources.
“It’s fight club. We don’t talk about fight club,” remarks David, a former contract worker. His identity is concealed by WIRED, which refers to him under a pseudonym as he wasn’t authorized for media interactions. “Anything posted from here, they get wind of it right away.”
Another ex-worker, referred to as John, recounts an episode where a colleague was supposedly dismissed for posting a photo of the site on Snapchat. This strict enforcement of NDAs has instilled a culture of caution among the workers, deterring them from risking any form of information leak.
The scale of the project is so vast that a considerable portion of the island's population is under the NDA's umbrella. Despite the secrecy, the mastermind behind the venture is well-known locally: Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, initiated this endeavor with land acquisitions starting in August 2014.
Investigations by WIRED, including interviews, public records, and court documents, indicate that the development of this approximately 1,400-acre estate, known as Koolau Ranch, has been enveloped in secrecy since its inception. The plans for the property include a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter and self-sustaining systems for energy and food. The overall expenses, including land acquisition costs, are estimated to exceed $270 million. The investigative evidence suggests the use of legal and political strategies in the project's progression, which some believe shows a lack of regard for local concerns. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are in the process of constructing one of the world's most extravagant properties.
