Major Pharmacy Pulls Popular Cold Medicine From Shelves After FDA Says it Doesn't Work

CVS announced on Thursday that it is voluntarily recalling specific oral cough and cold products after an FDA advisory panel found last month that the active ingredient is ineffective.

"We are voluntarily removing certain oral cough and cold products that contain phenylephrine as the only active ingredient from CVS Pharmacy stores," a CVS spokesperson said. "Other oral cough and cold products will continue to be offered to meet consumer needs."

"We are aware of the FDA Advisory Committee’s position on oral phenylephrine (PE) and will follow direction from the FDA to ensure products we sell comply with all laws and regulations," the statement continued.

A month after the FDA's Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee (NDAC) unanimously determined that oral phenylephrine, present in popular brands like Sudafed, Mucinex, Vicks, Allegra, and Dayquil, doesn't effectively alleviate nasal congestion, this action was taken.

The FDA emphasized that there were no safety concerns regarding the use of oral phenylephrine at the suggested dosage.

While the committee offers independent guidance and suggestions to the FDA, the final decisions rest with the government agency.

Even though the FDA hasn't concluded on the product's efficacy, CVS chose to withdraw the products.
