A reporter from the New York Post criticized White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday, claiming it was “anti-democratic” for not recognizing him during press conferences.
As of March 2023, Statista reports that the New York Post ranks as the fourth most circulated newspaper in the U.S., boasting an average readership of nearly 136,000. The paper's history traces back to 1801 when Alexander Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury, established it, as mentioned on the newspaper's official site. “It’s anti-democratic to refuse questions from one of our country’s four largest newspapers, Karine!” exclaimed Steven Nelson, the DC correspondent for the New York Post, when Jean-Pierre wrapped up the press event on Tuesday.

Nelson had an earlier disagreement with Jean-Pierre at an October 11 White House press conference due to her decision not to acknowledge him. “That shows disrespect to a free and independent media, to blacklist one of our country’s largest and most widely read newspapers, Karine,” commented Nelson after Jean-Pierre stated she wouldn't recognize him. “That shows contempt for a free and independent press.”
As Jean-Pierre was wrapping up Tuesday's press briefing, New York Post DC correspondent Steven Nelson raised his voice, saying, “It’s anti-democratic to refuse questions from one of our country’s four largest newspapers, Karine!”
Simon Ateba, a journalist from Cameroon, reportedly had disputes with Jean-Pierre as well as her predecessor, Jen Psaki, alleging that they showed bias against him, as per Newsweek's coverage.
On October 14, 2020, the New York Post unveiled details from a laptop purportedly left behind by Hunter Biden in a Delaware computer service store, which contained emails linked to the Biden family's business ventures. For disseminating the article, Twitter suspended several profiles, including the New York Post’s and the account of Kayleigh McEnany, the White House press secretary at the time, referencing its “hacked materials” rule.
A letter signed by over 50 ex-intelligence officials in October 2020 posited that the laptop's data “has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”
However, The Daily Caller News Foundation verified the genuineness of certain contents that same month. By March 2022, both The Washington Post and The New York Times affirmed the authenticity of the materials while discussing the Department of Justice's inquiries into Hunter Biden.
