President Donald Trump accused China on Friday of violating its trade agreement with the United States, saying the communist nation had “TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT.”
He didn’t detail what part of the deal was broken but said China failed to follow through on promises made during the 90-day tariff truce signed earlier this month.
“Two weeks ago China was in grave economic danger!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We went, in effect, COLD TURKEY with China, and it was devastating for them. I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them.”
Trump claimed he stepped in to help China out of a crisis. “I didn’t want to see that happen,” he said. “Everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual.”
But the president said that goodwill wasn’t returned. “China… HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US,” he declared. “So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
Under the deal, Trump agreed to lower the tariff on Chinese goods to 10%, while keeping a 20% tariff on fentanyl. China also dropped its retaliatory tariffs to 10%. The agreement was supposed to last 90 days.
Just hours before Trump’s post, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News that trade talks with China were “a bit stalled.” He said he hopes negotiations resume soon.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer echoed that concern, telling CNBC that China isn’t complying with rare earth mineral exports. “China continues to slow down and choke off things like critical minerals,” he said.
Meanwhile, Trump is still fighting a legal battle over his “Liberation Day” tariffs. A federal appeals court reinstated them Thursday, just one day after a lower court ruled Trump had exceeded his authority.
