Footage from Monday reveals a mother protecting her son when a black bear jumped onto a picnic table, consuming the son's birthday treats just inches from the child's face.
“The worst thing was that Santiago [the son] might get scared,” Silvia Macías, the mother, shared with The Associated Press on Tuesday. She elaborated that her 15-year-old son with Down syndrome tends to be easily frightened by animals. “That’s why I covered his eyes, because I didn’t want him to witness it and yell or flee. My fear was that if he became alarmed or shouted or startled the bear, the bear might respond.”

She informed the media that both she and her friend, Angela Chapa, were aware that encountering bears in the park located in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey was a possibility, though rare. Chapa, who captured the incident on video, mentioned that she understood the importance of not running from the bear, as highlighted by The AP.
In the footage, Macías can be observed intentionally avoiding direct eye contact with the bear, ensuring she did not engage in any behavior that might be perceived as hostile. She is also shown covering her son's eyes with her hand and embracing him. Macías recounted to The AP how the bear was so near that she could sense its breath.

Chapa observed a plate of enchiladas which the bear hadn't eaten and tossed it at a distance, enticing the bear to chase it, as mentioned by The AP. Fortunately, the birthday celebration wasn't completely disrupted as the boy received replacement birthday tacos, the publication stated.
The American National Park Service recommends individuals to stay composed and avoid abrupt motions when faced with bears in their natural habitat. On average, there are approximately 40 bear attacks on humans annually, with most of these encounters stemming from bears sensing a need to safeguard their offspring or their meals, according to the World Animal Foundation.
