Patrick Mahomes, the renowned quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, acknowledged the truth behind the rumors about his game-day superstition during an appearance on ESPN's “Monday Night Football Manning Cast” with Peyton and Eli Manning.
He confirmed that he indeed wears the same pair of red underwear for every game, a practice he has maintained since his rookie season. However, Mahomes clarified that he does wash them, except in instances where the team is on a winning streak, suggesting a blend of hygiene and superstition in his pre-game routine.
“Well first my wife Brittany got them for me so I…have to wear them you know,” Mahomes said to the Manning brothers. “At the same time I threw them on during that first season. We had a pretty good season that season.”

“I only wear them for gameday,” he continued. “So, they’re not too worn down. … I clean ’em. I wash ’em. Every once in a while, at least.”
“I mean, if we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash ’em, you know?” the MVP continued. “I’ve gotta just keep it rolling. As long as I’m winning football games, I’ll keep the superstition going.”
CNN reported that the rumor about Patrick Mahomes' game-day superstition originated from a former backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, who mentioned Mahomes' unique ritual.
“Sunday, it’s the same pair [of underwear],” Chad Henne said in February. “This has to be a superstition and good luck charm, for sure.”
Since his start with the Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes has played in over 100 NFL games. TMZ highlighted his impressive debut season in 2018, where he led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and earned the MVP award at just 23 years old. Under Mahomes' leadership, the Chiefs have reached the Super Bowl three times, securing victories in two of those appearances.
Currently, the Chiefs are leading not only the AFC West division but also the entire AFC with a 7-2 record. Their performance in the 2023 season began with a narrow loss to the Detroit Lions on September 7, with a score of 20-21, followed by a series of wins, except for a defeat against the Denver Broncos on October 29, where they lost 9-24. Given this mixed performance, the effectiveness of Mahomes' superstition involving his red underwear remains a playful topic of speculation.
