West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin has urged for a state of emergency to be declared at the southern border following the Biden administration's decision to continue with the border wall construction.
This call came after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), under President Biden, revealed plans to pick up where the Trump administration left off on the wall project. Amidst media focus on the House speaker's dispute, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas justified the decision late Wednesday, emphasizing the "acute and immediate need" for the wall.
"Far-left Democrats in Washington have to come to grips with the fact that we have to shut down the border," Manchin said on Fox News. "Similar to President Trump, the Biden administration should call a national emergency on the border because this crisis is impacting every corner of our country."
"We must work together to create an immigration policy that gives people the chance to come here legally as well as strengthens our border security with additional Border Patrol agents, new technology and a border wall," Manchin continued.
During a segment on "Morning Joe" Thursday, Manchin emphasized the importance of having a barrier in specific regions of the southern border, which are facing significant pressure from a rising number of unauthorized entrants.
While acknowledging that Mayorkas is "good people" with whom he collaborates, the senator from West Virginia stressed that the Biden administration should proclaim a state of emergency at the southern boundary "and seal it effectively."
"The administration, the president has to say, ‘Enough is enough.' And what Trump did, he basically declared a state of emergency," Manchin said.
"You have to build the wall. There's areas we need the wall, and there's areas where we need technology," the West Virginia Senator continued.
