A Union County high school teacher is under investigation after she reportedly told her students that Vice President Mike Pence should “shot in the head.”
The Cuthbertson High School teacher was allegedly irritated that Pence was visiting North Carolina, which is when she told her students that he should be shot. According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the information has been passed along to the Secret Service for further investigation.
The teacher, who FOX 46 is not naming at this time, allegedly made the comments to students the same week the vice president was in town to campaign for congressional elect Dan Bishop.
“This is the Vice President of the United States. He’s an elected official,” said Firas Obeid.
Obeid, a parent of two Cuthbertson students says, while he’s not necessarily a Pence supporter, it’s ridiculous to speak of shooting the VP.
“Affiliation to a specific party does not entitle us to make statement like that to anyone,” said Obeid.
Union County GOP Chair Allison Powers stated, “You should not be bringing in those type of viewpoints to your job.” She added, “To just wish that kind of violence on anybody is just way out of bounds.”
While Powers has not called for the teacher to be fired, she said that she is trusting the school board to handle the situation appropriately.
School board chair Melissa Merrell did not return FOX 46’s request for comment. District 3 representative Gary Sides, however, posted on Facebook saying, “I can assure you it will be taken seriously.”
I agree with Powers. It is okay to dislike someone, including someone in a position of authority. I loathed the fact that Barack Obama was our president for eight long years. However, I never uttered any kind of nonsense in wishing for his death. Even if the teacher truly has enough hate in her heart to wish death upon Pence, she should NOT be saying so in front of a classroom full of impressionable minds.
In my opinion, if she truly said what the report states, she should be fired on the spot. Her statement is beyond free speech. It is a hateful threat.
