President Donald Trump is threatening to block a new stadium deal for the Washington Commanders unless the team brings back its former name — the Redskins.
Trump also took aim at MLB’s Cleveland Guardians, demanding they revert to the “Indians,” a name they dropped in 2021.
“Times are different now than they were three or four years ago,” Trump posted. “We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
Later on Sunday, Trump said he might block a stadium deal on federal land unless the Commanders change their name. “The deal would be more exciting for everyone,” he wrote on Truth Social.
The team is currently working with D.C. officials to build a new stadium at the RFK Stadium site, now under city control after a key legislative win in Congress.
Trump also mocked Guardians part-owner Matt Dolan, who has lost multiple GOP Senate primaries, suggesting the team name change hurt his chances. “MAKE INDIANS GREAT AGAIN (MIGA)!” Trump said.
Dolan’s brother Paul owns most of the team. Trump claimed if the team returned to its old name, Dolan might “actually win an Election.”
Guardians president Chris Antonetti shrugged off Trump’s demand. “It’s a decision we made,” he said, adding the team is focused on building the Guardians brand.
